Overview

This activity is designed to develop and enhance knowledge and skill with point-of-care ultrasound for critically ill and injured patients. The video portions will cover ultrasound basics, FAST exam, evaluation for abdominal aortic aneurysm, vascular access using ultrasound, limited echocardiography, intravascular volume estimations using measurement of the IVC and ultrasound in the evaluation of the acutely dyspneic patient.

Expiration:  This enduring material activity was published on May 27, 2019.  This enduring material activity qualifies forAMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM for 19 months following its publication (until December 31, 2020). 


Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe basic use and principles of point-of-care ultrasound and its utility in the evaluation of unstable patients.
  2. Discuss the use of point-of-care ultrasound in the diagnosis of free fluid presence in the pericardium or peritoneum
  3. Describe techniques for acquiring sonographic images of the aorta to evaluate for AAA.
  4. List indications for ultrasound-guided vascular access
  5. Describe the utility of focused echocardiography in the patient with undifferentiated hypotension
  6. Discuss the utility of bedside ultrasound for the measure of intrasvacular volume/IVC measurement.
  7. List key conditions identified using point-of-care ultrasound to evaluate the patient with undifferentiated dyspnea.
  8. Describe the overall use and efficacy of ultrasound use for unstable patients
