Overview
Continuing medical education for Advanced Practice Providers within Wellspan to expand their knowledge base regarding specialty topics with a Halloween theme. The goal is to serve as a way to enhance knowledge of APPs but also serve as a networking event amongst colleagues, in line with the agenda of the APP Advisory Council.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to:

  1. Identify key clinical findings, risk factors, and complications associated with bone health, stroke, sickle cell disease, and occupational infectious diseases.
  2. Demonstrate current evidence-based approaches to the diagnosis, management, prevention, and risk reduction of these conditions in clinical practice.
  3. Review strategies that promote patient and healthcare-worker safety, timely intervention, and improved clinical outcomes for patients with acute and chronic health conditions.

Sickle Cell Disease: Recognize, Respond, and Reduce Complications

Objectives:
  • Differentiate common sickle cell disease genotypes and clinical presentations of appropriately evaluate patients presenting with suspected sickle cell related complications.
  • Recognize acute complications of sickle cell disease, including vaso-occlusive pain episodes and other potentially life-threatening presentations, and initiate appropriate evidence-based management.
  • Develop individualized management strategies for patients with sickle cell disease that address disease-modifying therapy, preventative care, recommended screening, and long term complications
  • Apply evidence based strategies to assess and manage acute sickle cell pain while avoiding common barriers to effective, patient-centered care.

  • Identify common occupational infectious disease exposure risks encountered in healthcare settings and determine appropriate prevention strategies.
  • Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) based on the mode of pathogen transmission and level of exposure risk.
  • Utilize evidence-based post-exposure management strategies, including appropriate evaluation, prophylaxis, follow up, and work restriction recommendations.

  • Assess the prevalence of osteoporosis in the adult patient population and identify the common risk factors and clinical consequences of poor bone health. 
  • Apply evidence-based screening recommendations to identify patients who require an osteoporosis evaluation and utilize patient history, laboratory data, and other diagnostic tests to determine fracture risk. 
  • Differentiate osteoanabolic from anti-remodeling therapies and select an appropriate treatment strategy based on an individual patient's fracture risk, clinical characteristics, and treatment goals.

  • Differentiate common primary headache disorders based on clinical presentation and diagnostic criteria.
  • Recognize headache red flags and concerning clinical features that warrant additional diagnostic evaluation, imaging, or specialty referral.
  • Select and individualize evidence-based acute and preventative headache therapies based on headache characteristics, patient comorbidities, contraindications, and treatment goals.
