Overview
Addiction is a disease that can be treated, and this podcast will help you stay up to date with the latest research that you can use in your addiction medicine practice. In this episode of Addiction Medicine Journal Club we discuss an inpatient protocol for managing alcohol withdrawal that minimizes benzodiazepine use.

Article citation:  Smith JT, Sage M, Szeto H, et al. Outcomes After Implementation of a Benzodiazepine-Sparing Alcohol Withdrawal Order Set in an Integrated Health Care System. JAMA Netw Open. 2022;5(2):e220158. doi:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2022.0158.

In our introduction we consider patients who struggle with one type of drug but can use others without developing a problem. We also discuss an article about “Recovery Capital” from the Journal of Addiction Medicine, and how patients know when they’re ready to taper off buprenorphine and methadone. The article discussed is: Zweben JE, Sorensen JL, Shingle M, Blazes CK. Discontinuing Methadone and Buprenorphine: A Review and Clinical Challenges. J Addict Med. 2021 Nov-Dec 01;15(6):454-460. PMID: 33323695.
