Overview

Addiction is a disease that can be treated, and these audios will help you stay up to date with the latest research that you can use in your addiction medicine practice. In each episode of Addiction Medicine Journal Club, we discuss articles or studies related to addiction.

In this episode of Addiction Medicine Journal Club, we discuss an article titled “Effect of initiation of medications for opioid use disorder on hospitalization outcomes for endocarditis and osteomyelitis in a large private hospital system in the United States, 2014–18.”

It is a retrospective study looking at how the initiation of methadone and buprenorphine in patients with opioid use disorder hospitalized with endocarditis or osteomyelitis affects their duration of antibiotic treatment, early discharges, and readmissions rates.

Article citation: Jo Y, Nosal R, Vittori A, et al. Effect of initiation of medications for opioid use disorder on hospitalization outcomes for endocarditis and osteomyelitis in a large private hospital system in the United States, 2014–18. Addiction. 2021;116:2127–2134.

In our introduction we again revisit the controversy surrounding dental problems with buprenorphine and discuss an ASAM letter to the FDA regarding the warning.

If you want your comments about this article included in a future episode, leave them in your CME quiz, email us at [email protected], talk to us on Twitter @AddicionMedJC, or even record a comment using the voice memo app on your phone and email it to us. Thank you for being part of the conversation.
