Overview

Showing the difference between adults and children and what pain modalities, treatments, interventions have been shown through research to help both adult and pediatric patients. Review the differences in pain interpretation through developmental growth; a general surgeon who performs procedures on adults and children and even partnering then with an anesthesia provider and the interventions they use for adults vs kids.

Review the developmental stages and the impact on pain interpretation.
Describe the common up to date pain medications used for both adults and pediatrics in the perioperative world.
Explain one's role as a healthcare team member on controlling the pain for adult and pediatric patients postoperatively.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to:

  1. Describe the need for an organizational shift to multimodal pain regimens in the perioperative setting.
  2. Classify normal pain physiology types and associated neurotransmitters and how they related to abnormal pain pathophysiology.
  3. Summarize the role of multimodal pain management during the prehospital setting and initial anesthesia assessment and strategies to educate patients for optimizing prior to surgery while discussing risks associated with multimodal approaches.
  4. Examine the role and benefits of regional anesthesia and its role in multimodal pain management in the perioperative phase of care. ?
  5. Discuss modalities for non-opioid analgesia and effective implementation of rescue regional anesthesia in the post-operative period.
