Overview
Keynote speaker(s) for the Richard M. Linder Memorial Research Lectureship to be held in conjunction with the 41st Annual Discovery Day program. Every day, people, our friends and family, volunteer for research studies. They give of themselves by providing biological samples, answering personal questions, engaging in unproven therapies, and by doing so, take on the real risks of research. Most of them will never meet the scientists who developed the protocol, determined safety parameters, or will analyze and publish the data. Yet, they still participate. Why? They participate because of hope and because they trust science. Responsible conduct of research is ultimately about protecting that trust. It's not just about regulations or oversight, but about the thousands of small decisions we make every day as investigators, IRBs, research professionals, statisticians—everyone involved in the conduct of research. This presentation will delve into the critical choices that shape the responsible conduct of research. Through real-world examples, we will explore how integrity in research is maintained, and the profound impact these decisions have on public trust. We will also highlight the crucial role of The Belmont Report as the ethical compass that guides these decisions, emphasizing its principles of respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. Learn how the principles of ethical research are applied in practice and the importance of safeguarding participants' trust through every phase of the research process. In this insightful session, we will explore our own personal ethical compass and highlight the invisible yet essential integrity underlying every responsible research endeavor, ensuring that the legacy of trust is sustained. Together, we will uncover the defining moments of integrity and the responsible practices that make research not just trustworthy, but transformative.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this presentation, the participant should be able to:

  1. Recognize Ethical Inflection Points: Equip participants with the ability to identify and navigate ethical challenges and ambiguities in their daily research practices, leveraging the principles of The Belmont Report as a guiding framework.
  2. Learn how to Foster a Culture of Integrity: Provide practical tools and strategies for fostering a culture of integrity within research environments, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful decision-making beyond mere compliance.
  3. Discuss how to Enhance Public Trust in Research: Highlight the profound impact that responsible conduct and ethical decision-making have on maintaining and enhancing public trust in science, ensuring that research practices are not only rigorous but also morally sound and transparent.
