Caring for Transgender and Gender Diverse Patients

Need within WellSpan for perioperative driven grand rounds for the clinical staff; including a surgical aspect of inpatient vs. ambulatory and how we can as a system ensure that this group periop, are educated / informed on topics/ways to care for the patients they see. Supporting Transgender with an adult focus, i.e., adult terms for identification that differ from terms the pediatric community would use. Would appreciate a transgender adult from the community that would be willing to provide experiences/feedback and suggestions on how to properly have conversations/identify pronouns. We feel it would be very impactful for our staff with our high adult population. We have seen an increase in this population at Apple Hill Surgical Center and identified a need for more education for our staff.

1. Review how minority stress affects health outcomes
2. Describe accurately the difference between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation
3. Identify common challenges that transgender and non-binary patients experience
4. Describe actions that providers can take to be a more affirming ally to patients who are transgender or non-binary
