Overview
Osteoporosis remains an under-recognized and under-treated problem. Many patients at risk for osteoporosis and fractures never receive screening or treatment, and wind up developing fractures. The majority of patients hospitalized for fragility fractures never receive screening or treatment either, despite being the highest risk patients for future fractures. The FLS is a partnership between our practice and WGSH. It's designed to identify those patients and establish them with physicians who have expertise in osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease, so that they can be evaluated and treated, if appropriate. This will hopefully help to reduce the risk of future fractures. So we're trying to improve awareness of OP and fractures and of the FLS.

Objectives
  1. Summarize the basic epidemiology of osteoporosis and how it remains an under-recognized and under-treated problem
  2. Discuss the morbidity of osteoporosis and the costs to the health care system
  3. Discuss the role of the Fracture Liaison Service in ‘bridging the gap’ to provide evaluation and management for patients at risk for osteoporotic fractures
  4. Define basics of bone density interpretation
  5. Identify options for treating osteoporosis
