Culture and Belonging Book Discussion: Heart of a Stranger: An Unlikely Rabbi's Story of Faith, Identity and Belonging

In an effort to continue to educate staff and physicians on Culture and Belonging topics, we will be discussing the Book "Heart of a Stranger: An Unlikely Rabbi's Story of Faith, Identity and Belonging" by Angela Buchdahl. Our book discussions focus on promoting inclusion and treating people as individuals. The importance of developing curious minds to truly embrace "You are the one".

1. Reflect on your own experiences of feeling like an insider or outsider in a community, and how Buchdahl's story may reshape how you think about welcoming others.
2. Discuss Buchdahl's framing of "the stranger" - drawn from the Torah's instruction to "know the heart of the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt"-and what it means to build community that welcomes rather than excludes differences.
3. Determine how we at WellSpan can come together to truly create a safe space for everyone.
